Preparing Kids for the Future: How and why we teach AI literacy

At Coco Coders, we believe learning to code is just the first step. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how we live, learn, and work, it’s no longer enough for kids to just use this technology - they need to understand how it actually works.

That’s why AI literacy is built into our coding lessons for kids at all stages of the curriculum.

What is AI Literacy?

Think of AI literacy as the ultimate tech toolkit for the future. It isn't just about technical know-how; it’s a mindset. Based on guidelines from top global education leaders like Code.org and the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), AI literacy helps young learners:

  • Engage critically with AI tools rather than just accepting whatever a computer tells them

  • Create alongside AI to brainstorm and amplify their own critical thinking skills

  • Manage AI by learning what tasks to hand off to machines and when humans need to step in

  • Design smart solutions by understanding the data that shapes how machines learn

A Must-Have Skill for Every Student

Learning about AI isn’t optional anymore - it’s a core subject that’s critical to a child’s future success. Research shared in the European Commission’s AI Literacy Framework shows that while roughly 3 in 4 young people think AI will play a big role in their future careers, less than half think their schools adequately prepare them for a future with AI.

Without a basic roadmap for how AI works, kids risk uncritically trusting biased or inaccurate computer outputs. By teaching these concepts early, Coco Coders helps students develop an understanding of how AI systems work so they can approach them with critical thinking and good judgment. Coco Coders is teaching students to ask not just what AI can do, but what it should do.

Connecting AI to What Students Love

What we love about how we teach this topic is that we don't teach AI in a vacuum. To keep things fun and relatable, our students dive into AI literacy activities during the final week of each curriculum theme. Coco Coders rotates our projects to focus on a new theme linked to real-life topics every four weeks. This approach enables our educators to integrate significant global technology trends with the specific subjects students are studying. By doing so, we foster student engagement and provide a clear real-world context for how artificial intelligence is applied.

Through interactive games and group discussions, students learn how machines recognize patterns, make predictions, and learn from human feedback. Most importantly, our lessons emphasize a golden rule of modern technology: AI is a helpful partner, but humans should always aim to stay in charge. By acting out and discussing how AI systems process information, kids see first hand that computers only know what humans teach them. This is just one example of how applied AI literacy is taught in the Coco Coders lessons.

Built on a Gold-Standard Global Framework

We want you to feel confident that your child is getting a world-class digital education. That’s why our curriculum is carefully mapped to the AILit Framework, an initiative created by the European Commission, the OECD, and Code.org.

By using these global standards, we ensure that even as technology evolves, the conceptual foundations we teach today remain practical, durable, and deeply rooted in human values for years to come.
