Our Spiral Curriculum
How Coco Coders Teaches Coding: Our Spiral Curriculum
Parents often ask how our program is organized and how their child’s skills will develop over time. At Coco Coders, we use a spiral curriculum because it helps students truly understand what they’re learning and remember it. Instead of rushing kids to “finish” a topic, we come back to the same core ideas again and again as students grow, each time adding a little more depth and challenge.
What This Looks Like for Your Child
Here’s an example: Early on, your child might learn that a loop is something that repeats an action. Later, that same idea shows up in new ways. This could mean animating characters, building game mechanics, or keeping track of scores and levels. Even though the concept feels familiar, the work is more complex. Students aren’t redoing the same lesson, they’re learning how to use the same skill in a variety of ways, and eventually to use that skill independently.
Why Parents Appreciate the Spiral Approach
The spiral curriculum makes learning stick. When children revisit concepts over time, they’re more likely to remember and actually use them. There’s also less pressure. Kids aren’t expected to master a topic right away, which builds confidence and keeps coding fun instead of stressful.
The spiral approach also works well for different learning styles and speeds. Some students need extra practice, while others are ready to go deeper. In a spiral approach, both are supported. Since coding is really about problem-solving, students learn how to choose the right tools for their own ideas, not just how to follow instructions and memorize syntax. And for busy families, the repetition of concepts means one or two missed lessons isn’t a huge problem.
Why This Works So Well for Coding
Professional programmers use the same ideas, like loops, variables and conditionals, all the time. The challenge is knowing how to use them in different situations. By revisiting these concepts throughout the program, students start to use them naturally, just like the pros.
Our Goal at Coco Coders
Our goal is to help students become confident creators who enjoy building things with code. The spiral curriculum gives them the time and support to grow at their own pace. Over time, you’ll see their projects become more creative, more complex, and more independently built. That steady growth you see in their projects is the result of learning that’s built to last.
